Driving Diversity Change

Published: May 7, 2021

Australia’s trucking industry is well-known for its diverse types of businesses and career opportunities; however, this diversity is not reflected in workforce demographics. While Australia is experiencing a big shift in the perception of transport, there is still a lot of ground to cover when it comes to diversifying the workplace.

Data shows the average Australian truck driver is a 47-year-old male, with females accounting for only three per cent of the driver workforce. Close to 60 per cent of truck drivers are aged 45 years or older.

To support an inclusive industry made up of all people of diverse communities, Teletrac Navman and the Australian Trucking Association teamed up in 2020 to launch the Driving Change Diversity Program. A ground-breaking initiative and an industry-first, bringing together participants from diverse backgrounds across Australia to celebrate diversity within trucking and develop diversity champions to promote the meaningful opportunities our essential industry offers.

There is no doubt that building a strong, diverse, and inclusive industry is key to responding effectively to the complex and changing needs of the industry in the future.

Teletrac Navman Director of Marketing Megan Duncan said the outcomes of the program will have a profound effect on the trucking industry and wider community.

“It has been fantastic to see the response to the program since its launch in 2020, even beyond the transport industry. We have been so thrilled to welcome the interesting mix of program participants, who really cover a broad spectrum of diverse backgrounds and roles in the transport industry,” Megan said.

“The outcomes of this program are truly exciting, and we cannot wait to drive change within our industry and beyond,” she said.

The 2021 program will see participants learn how to create change and facilitate diversity in their workplace and community, share personal insights and develop a strong professional network with like-minded individuals through an intensive training and development workshop.

The program is about coming together to share connections, start a conversation and discover how to drive change.

Together with the Australian Trucking Association, Teletrac Navman are excited to announce the program’s 2021 Diversity Champions at the Brisbane Truck Show. Join them at the Teletrac Navman Stand (099), Foyer from 11am on Thursday 13 May for this exciting announcement.
